Keeping Yourself Warm
The first hurdle in cool-weather riding is staying warm. In places like Texas, where temperatures can swing dramatically from morning to evening, layering is key. Mornings might be a brisk 35°F, while afternoons warm up to a comfortable 65°F. A flexible layering system works better than a heavy winter jacket in such conditions.
For effective layering, consider a base layer, a middle layer, and an outer layer:
- Base Layer: Opt for moisture-wicking thermal protection. This keeps sweat away from your core while trapping heat.
- Middle Layer: Use insulating materials like wool, fleece, or synthetics that provide warmth without adding bulk.
- Outer Layer: Choose a windproof riding jacket with built-in armor. It acts as your primary defense against windchill, especially at highway speeds.
A good strategy is to wear all layers during your chilly morning commute and shed the middle layer as temperatures rise later in the day.

Keeping Your Hands Warm
Cold hands can impair your ability to control the throttle, clutch, and brakes. Heated grips are a popular solution and convenient for regular use, but they primarily warm the palms. For more effective warmth, especially on extended rides or colder days, heated gloves are a superior option. They distribute heat to the back of your hands and down each finger, ensuring comprehensive warmth.
Heated Gear
If you’re looking to minimize bulk while maximizing warmth, consider investing in heated riding gear. A heated jacket liner can replace both the base and middle layers. Powered by your motorcycle’s battery, it provides consistent warmth as long as your bike is running. Many heated jacket liners also have wiring for heated gloves, making them a highly efficient option.
Gerbing is a trusted brand for heated gear, offering high-quality jacket liners and gloves designed for cold-weather riding. Keeping your core and hands warm usually covers 90% of your comfort needs.

Visibility
A full-face helmet is your best friend in cool weather, providing excellent wind protection. Pair it with a neck gaiter to keep the chill off your neck. However, cold weather can cause visors to fog up. A helmet visor with a pinlock insert prevents fogging and ensures clear visibility.
Road Conditions
Cooler temperatures can lead to hazardous road conditions. Watch out for:
- Black Ice: Especially near neighborhoods or businesses using sprinklers, black ice can form and be nearly invisible.
- Shaded Areas and Leaf Debris: These spots can significantly reduce traction.
- Deer Activity: During the rut season (October through winter), deer are more active, particularly around sunrise, sunset, and nighttime. Stay vigilant and anticipate their movements near wooded areas.
Cold-weather riding can be enjoyable if you’re prepared. With the right gear and a cautious approach, you can stay warm and safe throughout the cooler months.
