Intersections are the most dangerous places for motorcyclists, with about 42% of all fatal motorcycle crashes occurring there. An intersection isn’t just a typical stoplight but any point where two or more roads meet—including driveways and parking lot exits. This broad definition highlights just how many high-risk areas riders face. This week on MCrider, we dive into the top reasons why intersections pose such a threat, from left-turn collisions to driver inattention.
One of the greatest risks at intersections is left-turn collisions, where cars turn in front of oncoming motorcycles. The speed and angle of these impacts, often head-on, make them especially deadly for riders who lack the crumple zones and safety features that cars have. Blind spots at intersections also play a critical role in crashes. Both riders and drivers may have obstructed views, making it essential for motorcyclists to position themselves to be seen and to spot potential hazards in advance.
Another factor is the difficulty drivers have in judging a motorcycle’s speed and distance. Due to their smaller size, motorcycles can be easily misjudged, especially when riders are speeding. Add in the growing issue of driver distraction, often due to smartphones, and the risks increase significantly. Riders must stay vigilant, avoid blind spots, maintain reasonable speeds, and always anticipate mistakes from other drivers. Taking responsibility for personal safety is key when navigating the high-risk environment of intersections.
