Find a great motorcycle helmet
Tips for finding a properly fitted motorcycle helmet
Shape
Many riders are surprised to learn that helmets come in a variety of different internal shapes. The outside of the helmets may look relatively similar but the internal shape of the helmet is different.
Long Oval – Shaped for a head which is longer front-to-back (from forehead to the back of the skull) than it is side-to-side (ear to ear).
Intermediate Oval – Shaped for a head which is slightly longer front-to-back than it is side-to-side. Most motorcycle helmets will fall into this category as it is the most common head shape; if a helmet does not state its shape, this is usually it.
Round Oval – Shaped for a head which has almost identical front-to-back and side-to-side measurements.
Size
Before you order a helmet though you need to know what size helmet you need. This is the one area where a lot of new riders make a mistake. New riders will try on various helmets and often they purchase a helmet that is too big. A new helmet should be tight…not overly uncomfortable and not any hot spots or pressure points but it should be tight. That way after several hours of wearing it the helmet can break in for you and provide the perfect fit.
Proper Fit
What you are looking for is a helmet that feels very snug or slightly tight with consistent pressure all over your head. No pressure points, hot spots or areas where the helmet feels especially tight or painful.
If you put the helmet on and can easily slide a finger between the helmet and your forehead, it is too big.
If you put the helmet on and rotate your head side to side like you are saying no and the helmet moves independent of your head…it is too big.
