I have stated in the past that I think gloves are possibly the second most important piece of safety equipment that we can wear.
When a rider is involved in a crash they instinctively put their hands in front of them to cushion the blow. Gloves make a huge difference in our ability to keep our hands safe in a crash. Hand and wrist injuries are among the leaders of types of injuries in a motorcycle crash.
But, rarely are they the difference between life and death.
Spain's General Director of Traffic (DGT) is looking to make it mandatory for riders to wear gloves while riding on a motorcycle. A similar law has been in place in France since 2017.
My approach to the topic of motorcycle protective gear is to help you be an informed rider and then allow you to pick the level of protection best for you. That doesn't mean I won't correct riders who falsely state that helmets don't save lives, or that it is too hot to ride in the heat with a motorcycle jacket. I live in TEXAS and ride with a jacket on every time I get out on the road. Yes, it is HOT, but the alternative is worse.
Every time I ride I wear a full face helmet, jacket, gloves, and over the ankle shoes. On longer trips or longer days on the motorcycle I will mix in a pair of dedicated riding pants, the rest of the time it is bluejeans.
This level of protection makes sense to me and one I have become accustomed to riding with. But, if you make an informed decision to ride otherwise who am I to tell you that you don't have that right.
Forum members, leave your thoughts below. I think this makes a good conversation on protective gear and the role it plays to protect us on the road.
