Crashes on motorcycles happen fast—sometimes in just two seconds or less. That’s not much time to avoid a dangerous situation, and understanding how to respond can make all the difference.
In this post, we’ll take a look at real-world motorcycle crash scenarios to see just how quickly things can go wrong—and what you can do to stay ahead of danger with solid Road Strategy.
Oh, and stick around to the end. I’ve got a big announcement for you—don’t worry, it has nothing to do with McDonald’s.
How Fast Do Crashes Really Happen?
To demonstrate how quickly crashes can unfold, we’ll break down a few real-life crash and near-miss examples. We’ll include a timer on the screen so you can see exactly how long riders had to react—usually, not more than two seconds.
Before we dive into those examples, I want to thank Quad Lock for sponsoring this week’s video.
What the Footage Tells Us
Watching crash videos might give us an advantage:
- We know something is about to happen.
- We can pause, rewind, and analyze.
But in the real world, we don’t get those luxuries. We can’t pause time or zoom in on clues. That’s why developing a strong riding strategy is so critical to motorcycle safety.
The Breakdown: What Happens in Those 2 Seconds?
Those two seconds between spotting a hazard and impact involve:
- Perception – Noticing the threat.
- Decision – Choosing how to react.
- Action – Executing your plan (braking, swerving, etc.).
If any of those stages are delayed, you’re out of time—and out of luck.
Common Mistakes That Eat Up Reaction Time
Here are a few habits that can burn up your two-second window:
- Target fixation
- Poor lane positioning
- Following too closely
- Speeding
- Inattention
- Riding impaired
Each of these reduces your margin for error when things go south.
The Clock Starts Before the Crash
Once the threat appears, you’re locked into that two-second window. But the good news is:
You can do a lot to prepare before the timer ever starts.
That’s where Road Strategy comes in.
What You Can Do Before a Crash Happens
Here’s how to take control of the situation before it becomes one:
- Constantly scan the road for hazards.
- Study driver behavior and anticipate mistakes.
- Cover your brakes when approaching intersections or tight traffic.
- Adjust your lane position to increase visibility.
- Keep a safe following distance to give yourself more time to react.
Good Road Strategy is proactive, not reactive.
Not Every Threat Materializes—And That’s Okay
I’ve made countless small adjustments—covering the brakes, changing my lane position, easing off the throttle—only for nothing to happen.
But that’s part of a good strategy. You get endless chances to react to false alarms, but often only one shot to avoid the real threat. That’s a trade I’ll take any day.
Keep Your Skills Sharp
Another key piece of motorcycle safety is keeping your riding skills fresh:
- Practice emergency braking and swerving.
- Don’t let your skills sit on the shelf like old vegetables. Skills fade if you don’t use them.
The MCrider Field Guide is a great tool for this. It’s packed with training exercises you can do in any open parking lot to keep your skills sharp and reaction-ready.
You can get access to the Field Guide free as a member or purchase it directly from the links below.
